To celebrate the opening of the 200th InterContinental hotel globally, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts have partnered with well-known contemporary London-based artist, Alexander Hall (also known under the alias of ‘Haut de Gamme’). The partnership has seen a creation of an art installation of 200 hand-painted champagne bottles, each bottle in the installation has been hand-decorated in the artist’s signature drip style. Every piece of art uniquely represents each of our 200 hotels and the finished bottles, in Hall’s exuberant drip-style, are suspended to create a stunning oeuvre revealing the number ‘200’.
Alexander Hall, Haut de Gamme, says: “When I first started painting champagne bottles I just wanted it to make people feel something positive. Champagne for me means happiness, joy, celebration and the idea of bringing people together. That's why I decided to paint on champagne bottles to celebrate the 200 InterContinental hotels. I wanted the bottles to reflect each InterContinental hotel's unique personality, design and location, as well as the legacy and pioneering spirit of the founder, Juan Trippe. It's been an honour to be asked to do this project and I hope that when I'm 80, I will be asked to celebrate 400 InterContinental hotels around the world.”
The 200th InterContinental hotel to open was the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, located in a former quarry in south-western Shanghai. The 18-storey architectural masterpiece has two floors above ground, and 16 below, including two floors underwater.
To celebrate this milestone a little closer to home, this summer we’ll be celebrating 200 years of InterContinental with a special Champagne selection in The Verandah Restaurant & Bar. Join us for Summer Sunset Hour, daily from 5pm – 6pm and enjoy a glass of Mumm Champagne for $19 or a Petit Cordon for $14.
